History / Chairman Message

This Department was established as the Department of Chemical Engineering in 1971. In 1992, we started a Master’s program and subsequently a PhD program in 2001. To keep up with the current industry and social trends, the Department was expanded into the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering in 2003 and the curriculum was adjusted accordingly. Our Department has cultivated more than 5,000 graduates serving in industry and academia. The current 20 faculty members, with expertise in chemistry and materials engineering, are dedicated to teaching and research. With continuous advancement in academic professions, the faculty incorporates their research into their lectures. Their research covers a wide range of topics, consisting of fine separation and filtration, process design and integration, nanocomposite materials, optoelectronic materials, polymeric membranes, and energy engineering. We have had the greatest success in research among all the departments at Tamkang University. From 2007 to 2012, an average of 17 research projects were carried out each year, with an annual fund of NT$16 million and 64 pieces of periodical literature listed on the SCI every year. Collaboration and interaction between professors in different fields in Taiwan and worldwide is encouraged. A good rapport with the related industry allows the academy to interact with the industry.

The Department’s educational programs aim to produce graduates with knowledge and skills of chemical and materials engineering, and an understanding of professional responsibility. Students are required to earn 142 course credits before graduation, 99 of which should be from required courses and 43 from selected courses. The courses provided are certified by the Institute of Engineering Education, Taiwan. Due to the scope of knowledge and skills related to chemical and materials engineering, we provide basic, advanced and practice courses, as well as two up-to-date selected programs, the Green Energy Program and the Materials Technology Program, which offer systematic learning and conform to future trends. Laboratory courses on advanced topics are offered every school year. Students are expected to learn laboratory skills, statistical analysis and produce academic reports within teams. Each year, 3 to 4 projects are submitted to the Undergraduate Research Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology by undergraduate students. Senior students have won awards in the competition of process design from the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineering almost every year. They took home both the first and third places in 2014. The Department also offers a 5-year Bachelor and Master’s program. College graduates can continue their studies in our Department and get a Master’s degree in one year.

In 2015, we plan to reduce the class number from 3 to 2 in hope that only students of the highest quality will be admitted. A variety of events and activities are held to promote the Department and to encourage students with excellent performance to enroll. The course will be even more diverse with the division of professional practice provided alongside the division of academic research. The intensive practice courses help produce graduates with professional knowledge of chemical and materials engineering. Masters students undertaking internships with the related companies are allowed to submit skill reports, laboratory reports and work projects as their Masters’ dissertations. With the good academic and natural environment provided by Tamkang University, the Department is sure to prosper and thrive.
